Football club fan tokens total R$2.2 billion in Brazil
Football clubs are betting big on fan tokens and NFTs, about 52 contracts have already been signed by sports entities, which include clubs in the Brazilian series A and B, and companies in the “cryptoeconomy”. According to a survey by Marcello Macêdo Advogados and Win The Game, clubs such as Flamengo, Corinthians, São Paulo, Vasco, Atlético Mineiro and Internacional already accumulate BRL 2.2 billion with fan tokens.
According to Lawyer Guilherme Macêdo, this market is very promising and intends to extend to other sports such as volleyball, basketball and F1, as long as there is a transparency capable of guaranteeing the safety of both clubs and fans. “It is necessary to expose the risks and benefits involved from the purchase of the crypto asset, providing greater legal security to the operation, without excluding educational campaigns, whose implementation is a mandatory measure”, says the lawyer.
The study “Mapping of contracts between sports entities and crypto companies in Brazil”, unprecedented in the country, reveals exclusive data from sports entities that entered the tokenization market. About 14 of the 20 clubs that compete in Série A of the Brazilian Championship already have contracts linked to NFTs, fan tokens or fantasy games; in Serie B, 15 of the 20 clubs have not yet joined the tokenization market. Recently consolidated institutions of national sport such as CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), Maracanã and NBB (Novo Basquete Brasil), have also invested in the NFTs market.
Even with the popularization of the market, there is still no regulation of crypto-assets in Brazil, but there is a possibility of regulation of the asset trading market. PL 4,401/21, which is currently pending in the National Congress, governs the functioning of the market and that of exchanges, which are crypto-asset brokers.
