What is NFT?
The acronym NFT stands for non-fungible token. In translation into Portuguese, non-fungible token, which is something that cannot be replaced. The technology allows a person or company to record any type of digital file: Image, video or sound. From there, the item is associated with a computer code and becomes something "unique".
Digital files are recorded by the blockchain system, the same cryptocurrency technology, digital currencies such as Bitcoin. Operations are performed by several computers around the world. All information included cannot, in theory, be changed.
NFT purchases can be made using cryptocurrencies, but some sites also accept credit cards. The value of sales calls attention. In January 2023, for example, total sales of NFTs on the ethereum blockchain – a platform that hosts most of the trades – reached US$780.2 million, which, at the current exchange rate of the Brazilian currency, corresponds to around Rs. $4 billion.
Digital art files are among the most traded. An animated illustration of a monkey shooting green lasers from its eyes, called "Bored Ape Yacht Club #5840", went on to sell for $822,700 (R$4.3 million) in January 2023.
