With experience in the metaverse, Feira da Família Folhas presents the sustainability of Curitiba

Curitiba's environmental sustainability left the streets, parks and squares and invaded the metaverse, the virtual world that simulates real spaces through games with augmented reality glasses and joysticks. The innovation was presented this Tuesday (6/13), the first day of the Folhas de Sustentabilidade Family Fair.

The beta version of Metaverso da Família Folhas (still under development) is one of the sustainability attractions that the City Hall of Curitiba presents on the Promenade of Rua XV de Novembro, in Boca Maldita, until this Thursday (15/6), from 9 am to 5 pm, free entry.

The Folhas de Sustentabilidade Family Fair is part of the Environment Month program, which the City Hall promotes in June to publicize sustainability actions.

Sustainability in the Metaverse

On this first day, the Metaverso da Família Folhas was a success among students from public schools in Curitiba who went to see the fair. The innovation, coordinated by the Municipal Department of Social Communication, is under development and will be officially launched to the public in June.

The Metaverso da Família Folhas playfully represents five tourist attractions in Curitiba: Parque Barigui, Parque Tanguá, Passeio Público, Jardim Botânico and the Municipal School of Sustainability, in Bosque Zaninelli. The goal is to pass on the sustainability knowledge taught by the Folhas Family through gamification, virtual games.

Student Ágatha Neves Ferreira, 11 years old, from Coronel Durival Britto e Silva Municipal School, got in line twice to “play” with the Folhas Family in the Metaverse. “We walk along, it's like a game and the Folhas Family appears. I learned how to plant and take care of plants, how people can help to take care of the environment. I'll be back to play more often”, he said.

“The games bring all the learning about sustainability that Família Folhas teaches, this information is passed on with gamification”, explained David Chang, who developed the games for Família Folhas in Metaverso.

In the five scenarios that the “avatars” go through, it is possible to learn how to correctly separate the garbage. In the future, it will also be possible to interact with the characters of the Folhas Family, the friendly and sustainable Seu Folha, Dona Fofô, Fofis, Fifo, Flora, Fefo and the pet Folheco. For now, they appear in in-game videos explaining sustainability.

But it is not only in the virtual environment that it is possible to see the Folhas Family. On the three days of the fair, at 10 am and 3 pm, the group's theater will be presented. The presentation lasts about 20 minutes and the characters teach the children about composting, climate change, taking care of the rivers with the Amigo dos Rios program, the correct separation of garbage, the importance of planting trees with the 100 Thousand Trees challenge, the Ecocidadão program, the use of renewable energies and environmental sustainability in general.

Among the actions presented at the fair is the City Hall's Ecocitizen program, which brings together 40 associations of recyclable material collectors. Each association is remunerated according to the amount of material received and the value is distributed among the associates as in a cooperative.

Nair Santana has been working for 9 years at Associação Corbélia, in the São Miguel neighborhood, at Regional CIC. “We are going to talk about awareness, that everything starts at home with the correct separation of waste. Organic items, such as fruit and vegetable peelings, should not be placed with recyclable waste. This can go into composting,” explained Nair.

“People should value more the work of recyclable collectors, who help to preserve the environment”, said Nair. At Associação Corbélia, 23 families live on the income they receive from the Ecocidadão program.

The director of the Department of Environmental Education, Leila Maria Zem, explained that the main objective of the fair is to present to the population all the projects and actions developed by the Municipality of Curitiba to promote environmental sustainability.

“We want to sensitize and make the population aware of care for the environment, with guidelines and also for them to know our actions and collaborate with our projects and programs”, he defined.

Sustainability

Boxes with stingless bees from the Jardins de Mel program, taxidermied animals from the Natural History Museum of Capão da Imbuia, models of a sanitary landfill and the river basin of the Belém River are also on display at the sustainability fair.

The Food and Nutritional Security Mobile Food Unit is at the fair to teach people how to make full use of food. The secretariat is also selling pine nuts with cooked portions for R$5 and R$10. It is also possible to take raw pine nuts home, the kilo costs R$15.

Emma Lai Antoniutti, 9 years old, a student at the Maria Clara Brandão Tesserolli Municipal School, enjoyed spending the morning of this Tuesday (13/6) at the fair. “I enjoyed seeing this type of museum with recyclable materials, and the game of climate change. I learned that carbon dioxide is what changes the most and interferes with our climate,” he said.

In addition to the Municipal Secretariat for the Environment, which coordinates and organizes the Folhas de Sustentabilidade Family Fair, other municipal secretariats participate, such as Education, Food and Nutrition Security, Social Defense and Traffic and Sports, Leisure and Youth; the Regional Administration of the Matrix; state bodies such as Embrapa, Sanepar, the State Secretariat for Sustainable Development and Tourism; and private institutions, such as the Business-School Integration Center – CIEE, Uninter and Estre Ambiental S/A.
