As World Cup 2026 approaches, FIFA Rivals tops 2.5 million downloads

FIFA has unveiled a significantly expanded digital football strategy ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, moving away from a single-game approach and towards a broader ecosystem spanning multiple partners, platforms, and experiences.

The announcement highlights FIFA’s ambition to create a year-round digital football ecosystem that reaches fans across mobile games, esports, social experiences, and emerging technologies. Rather than relying on a single flagship title, FIFA is now pursuing what it describes as a multi-partner model designed to engage different audiences in different ways.

For blockchain gaming company Mythical Games, the most notable detail is that FIFA disclosed that FIFA Rivals has surpassed 2.5 million downloads since its 12th June 2025 launch.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup taking place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, FIFA Rivals is well-positioned to benefit from increased global football engagement over the coming months. The game had previously announced more than one million downloads shortly after launch, making the new figure an important new milestone for Mythical Games as it seeks to establish a sustainable audience for its Mythos ecosystem.

However, FIFA Rivals is only one part of a much wider strategy.

FIFA also highlighted its growing commitment to esports through the FIFAe platform. In particular, the organization confirmed plans for Legacy World Cup tournaments, which will celebrate the history of football gaming while connecting older competitive communities to FIFA’s modern esports initiatives.

These tournaments are expected to sit alongside FIFA’s broader esports programme, helping bridge the gap between generations of football gamers. Rather than treating esports solely as a professional competitive activity, FIFA appears to be positioning it as part of a larger cultural ecosystem that includes nostalgia, community participation, and historical recognition.

For Mythical Games, the announcement provides another indication that FIFA sees FIFA Rivals as a key pillar of that future. While the 2.5 million download figure comes directly from FIFA rather than independent market intelligence or Mythical Games itself, its inclusion in the organization’s strategic update suggests the game is becoming an increasingly important component of FIFA’s digital ambitions heading into the 2026 World Cup cycle.

As a result, FIFA Rivals now sits at the intersection of three powerful trends: the continued growth of mobile gaming, the expansion of football esports, and FIFA’s desire to build a persistent digital football ecosystem that extends far beyond the World Cup itself.
