Wildcard’s web3 meta layer Thousands is closing down

One of the most ambitious web3 gaming infrastructure projects is closing down. Thousands was designed as the streaming and community layer for Playful Studio’s PC MOBA Wildcard, and potentially other games too.

Yet despite some impressive metrics in early testing, Playful has announced that it’s sunsetting the entire project, which also includes Wildcard Premiere League, which would have been the game’s meta layer, including franchise options.

This means that Thousands’ current USDC treasury will be airdropped to WPL’s franchise owners on a pro rata basis allocated via assets held and platform activity. The remaining WC tokens held will also be burned. WC was a token originally airdropped to early players and NFT holders that could be used to buy WPL assets. Of course, the proposed THOU token will not now be launched.

In a statement on X, Thousands commented

“Even though there is not a sustainable path forward for the network, the Thousands protocol ran. Exhibitions brought real-time spectator engagement to competitive play. Tournament players claimed prizes. Meta Oracle delivered live information about features, balance, and the meta to developers and distributed participant rewards. WPL went live, rosters were built, franchises were managed, and eligible managers received USDC on-chain over multiple Epochs.”

Thousands will remain online until 7th May for the final distribution of prizes, which require KYC services.

Interestingly, however, it appears that Wildcard, as the underlying web2 game, will continue in some form, with an official community Discord post stating “the Wildcard IP, Champions, Summons, game systems and mechanics remain as a solid foundation for whatever comes next”.
