Saga sells its blockchain, pivots to AI agents

Saga has become the latest blockchain company to reframe itself around AI, selling operational stewardship of its crypto network to Alapin Holdings, part of the dao5 family, while launching Saga AI Labs as its new strategic focus.

The company says the move reflects the rapid growth of its AI agent business and allows it to concentrate resources on AI-driven digital characters, consumer platforms and autonomous software agents.

This means the Saga network will continue under new stewardship, with Alapin taking responsibility for its long-term operation and ecosystem development. Saga says the chain has processed more than 23 million transactions since launching in early 2024, with more than $2 billion in aggregate value moving across the network.

But the blockchain hasn’t been successful in terms of attracting builders, and certainly not for games.

Instead, Saga AI Labs is now focused on what it calls “synthetic relationships”: persistent AI characters that can interact with users across social platforms, messaging apps, games and digital marketplaces. Instead of treating characters as static IP locked inside a single game, Saga wants to turn them into always-on personalities that can answer questions, create content, onboard users and help drive engagement beyond the game itself.

That strategy is already being tested through gaming partnerships. Saga has worked with Etermax on an AI version of Willy, the host of Trivia Crack. It has also partnered with GFAL on Crystal Beaumont, an influencer-style AI character connected to Diamond Jewels (previously called Diamonds Dreams), and with BONOXS on an AI community manager for BONOXS Arena.

For games, this is a practical use case for AI because it does not require a full reinvention of gameplay. It starts with something publishers already understand: characters, communities and marketing.

AI agents can extend a game’s surface area and giving players more ways to interact with its IP. That is potentially much easier to sell than abstract blockchain infrastructure.

Of course, Blockchain may still matter as transaction rail, but companies are now chasing the consumer-facing layer where AI can create visible value. Saga’s shift suggests that the next phase of digital entertainment will not just be about owning assets or moving them onchain.

It will be about characters that keep talking, keep creating and keep pulling audiences back into the worlds they came from.
