Pixelcraft steps back, proposes handing control to Aavegotchi’s DAO

Aavegotchi

Pixelcraft Studios, the team that built and stewarded the Aavegotchi project and games, is stepping back from its role as the project’s default lead studio.

In a blog post, the studio outlined a structured transition window running from 1st June 1 to 1st September 2026, during which the Aavegotchi DAO is being asked to decide how key responsibilities should be handled.

The assets in scope are substantial: Aavegotchi IP and trademarks, creative assets, aavegotchi.com and related web properties, Discord, X, YouTube, GitHub, NPM, SDKs, documentation, repos, technical assets, contributor coordination and ongoing ecosystem operations.

But this is not an automatic transfer. Pixelcraft’s preferred direction is for the DAO to take more direct stewardship where appropriate, with formal transfers and access changes requiring governance approval and implementation.

The reason is blunt. Pixelcraft says it was unable to turn the DAO’s last major funding round into either a self-sustaining studio model or a reliable protocol revenue engine.

The studio says its burn rate was roughly $300,000 per month when those funds were initially transferred, later reduced to around $200,000 after its Geist L3 was terminated, and then lower from there. Its remaining runway is now limited, with resources focused on critical infrastructure, transition support and remaining company obligations.

Three products — Gotchi Guardians, DeFi Dungeon and Gotchiverse 3D — should no longer be assumed to be under active Pixelcraft studio development. They may still be preserved, archived, maintained in limited form or built on by others, but any return to active development will likely need to come through DAO-led teams, independent contributors, new studios or funded proposals.

The core protocol remains live, fully onchain and migrated to Base.

Existing NFTs, GHST, wearables, parcels, Gotchis and other ecosystem assets are not being migrated or altered by the announcement. Holders do not need to connect wallets, migrate assets or sign anything. The announcement is not a technical migration or token event. It is an operating-model reset.

Pixelcraft frames the move as both philosophical and financial. Aavegotchi, it argues, should not default back to a single-studio dependency. Members Coderdan, goldenXross and Xibot plan to remain active in the community, but as contributors among others rather than as the automatic centre of control.

The post also points to broader crypto regulatory discussions, including the CLARITY Act, as part of the case for reducing centralized control, limiting special permissions and making governance more transparent.

The DAO now has a difficult practical agenda. It must decide whether to accept stewardship of the IP and trademarks, whether some creative assets should become CC0, who should manage social media and documentation, how to handle GitHub and other technical assets, and what budget should support ongoing infrastructure costs such as hosting, subgraphs, tooling, domains, technical maintenance, moderation and communications.

Pixelcraft expects to cover the estimated $4,000 legal cost of the trademark transfer, but the wider operating model will require proposals, votes and execution.

This is a pattern we are seeing more frequently in blockchain gaming. Studios that raised during the 2021-22 cycle, shipped products into a bear market and failed to find sustainable product-market fit are now facing hard choices. Some shut down entirely.

Others, like Pixelcraft, attempt to hand more responsibility to the community — a move aligned with web3 values but operationally difficult. DAOs can vote, but live game operations require speed, accountability and consistent execution.

The 1st September review point will be telling. If the Aavegotchi DAO can organise itself, fund operations and attract new builders, it could become a genuine case study in decentralised game stewardship. If not, the risk is that transition becomes a more polite word for slow fade.
