FIFA Rivals launches its legacy World Cup mode

With just over a month to go until World Cup 2026 kicks off, Mythical Games is leaning on past glories for the latest mode in its FIFA Rivals mobile game.

Called Legacy World Cup, the mode currently covers the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups, enabling players to replay past tournaments, playing against AI, and hopefully winning historic players for their squad in the main PVP mode.

Gated with its own entry ticket system, players choose a tournament year, select a national team, and then try to play through the competition from the group stage to the final.

If you get there, the reward is a Legacy Player from that era of your chosen team, who can be added to their regular PvP team.

But you don’t always get what you want!

But whatever players you win, they’re all relatively valuable because these players are only available through this mode. Of course, if you collect enough resources, any player in FIFA Rivals can be converted into a NFT and traded on the Pulse marketplace.

The concept is also strong in the context of FIFA Rivals’ status as one of only two FIFA games boasting the official World Cup licence. In this manner, the Legacy mode gives Mythical Games a way to turn football history into repeatable live content.

It also gives the game a useful runway into World Cup 26. More tournaments, more nations and more historic players can be added over time. In this manner, World Cup Legacy mode could become one of FIFA Rivals’ main retention systems rather than just a launch-window feature.
