ZED Champions shuts down, but IP is rebooting within online casino Clutch

ZED Champions is coming to an end in its current form, with the digital horse racing IP set to move into a new experience that’s being developed with online crypto casino Clutch.

The current season of ZED Champions will be its last, ending on 24th May 2026. After that, development will shift away from the existing competitive racing game and towards a casino-native product built around continuous racing, live betting, horse pack openings and seasonal leaderboards.

It marks a significant change of direction for one of web3 gaming’s most recognisable brands. ZED Champions began life in 2019 as ZED RUN, an NFT horse racing project built around digital ownership, breeding, race strategy and speculation. Over time, the experience evolved into ZED Champions, which launched in April 2025 and attempted to refine the game around structured seasons and competitive racing.

But the latest announcement makes clear that VHS, the team behind the IP, now sees the long-term opportunity elsewhere. Rather than continuing to operate ZED Champions as a standalone web3 racing game, it is working with Clutch to reposition the IP inside a casino-grade environment.

That sound like a hard pivot, but it also makes strategic sense. ZED has always sat awkwardly between game, collectible, betting simulation and financialized ownership system. Its core elements — horses, odds, live racing, competition, digital assets and strategic ownership — naturally overlap with gambling and casino mechanics. Moving into a betting-native context clarifies the proposition.

Clutch also brings the infrastructure VHS needs for that shift. The company operates as a crypto-native gaming platform combining casino products, sportsbook functionality and digital asset mechanics. For ZED, that means access to live betting rails, a player base already familiar with odds and wagering, and an engagement model designed around repeat play.

The ambition is to rebuild ZED as a racing platform designed for continuous participation rather than discrete seasonal competition. Races will still run 24/7, but the surrounding product will be more explicitly casino-led, with live betting and broader player participation at the centre of the experience.

Longer term, VHS says the goal is for ZED to extend beyond a single destination, potentially including larger global jackpots, distribution through casino partners, and broader access to the IP across online gaming ecosystems.

For existing players, however, the announcement leaves obvious questions. The future treatment of NFT horses, $ZED and reZED are addressed via an FAQ, which states that “ZED Champions players will be eligible for launch rewards and perks in the new experience, including horse packs, bonus bets, and other Clutch-based player benefits”.

Full details will be shared by Clutch closer to release.

Viewed more broadly, however, this shift may also be one of the more honest evolutions of a web3 gaming IP. ZED Champions’ strongest ingredients were never conventional game design. They were ownership, odds, scarcity, racing and speculation.

By moving into a regulated casino environment, the IP may finally be entering the category it was always closest to.
