MMORPG Avalon confirms Soneium for its AI-powered creator economy
Things had been very quiet when it came to blockchain announcements from AI-focused MMORPG Avalon. Would it still be using blockchain? But as it builds momentum towards its first open playable version in late 2026, more details have now been provided.
Granted these mainly concern the game’s tech platform but, for the first time, there’s also confirmation that Avalon will use Sony’s Soneium Ethereum-based L2 blockchain for item ownership and trading.
The detail comes via its Summer Update materials, which position the project as much more than a conventional online RPG. Avalon is describing itself as a platform where players can create worlds, build experiences and earn from what they create.
Its core game world remains Elysara, a 32 square kilometer high fantasy MMO environment, but the wider roadmap now also includes Vireon, a second cyberpunk desert world. Around those worlds, Avalon is building a set of tools designed to let players and creators generate, remix and monetize content.
These include
- Forge, an AI-powered creation system for NPCs, items, abilities and loot tables;
- Merlin, a no-code visual logic system for triggers, events and gameplay rules; and
- Sage, an AI world generation system intended to turn prompts into playable worlds and experiences.
In this context, Soneium will be used as the ownership and monetization layer rather than the main feature of the game. Avalon’s materials refer to “Soneium-powered ownership”, while its monetization slide says the chain will be used to support ownership, provenance and royalties.
Avalon says the blockchain elements will be abstracted from players, with no requirement to manage wallets, addresses or gas fees. The stated goal is for creators to own their assets onchain, while still keeping the experience closer to a normal game platform.
Avalon’s roadmap suggests this will be tested in stages. Its July 2026 private beta is focused on creator onboarding, community playtests, platform stress testing and further Elysara expansion.
Fall 2026 is described as a period of “flywheel validation”, covering creation, play, retention, marketplace testing, creator monetization and community-generated content. Early Access is planned for the end of 2026, with persistent online worlds, the creator economy, marketplace launch and live service operations.
The blockchain integration therefore comes relatively late in the value chain. Soneium can record ownership and royalties, but it cannot by itself create demand for Avalon’s worlds or assets. That will depend on whether Forge, Merlin and Sage can let creators produce content that is coherent, balanced and fun, rather than simply increasing the amount of AI-generated material in circulation.
But, for now, the Soneium confirmation gives Avalon a clearer blockchain direction. It also gives the project a Sony-linked infrastructure partner at a time when most blockchain gaming platforms are trying to move away from speculation and toward more practical use cases.
