France begins three-year trial for Web3 games with strict rules
France has taken a decisive step in regulating digital games by authorizing, through a recently signed decree, a three-year trial period for so-called games with monetizable digital objects (JONUM).
The measure, which is already in effect, places this new sector under the direct supervision of the Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), the country’s gaming regulator.
The government’s goal is to enable Web3 technological innovation, but within a highly controlled regulatory framework to protect consumers, especially minors.
How will the player limits work?
The decree’s main concern is, undoubtedly, the protection of the player.
From the moment of registration, which requires rigorous verification of identity and legal age, users are obligated to set spending and gaming time limits for a seven-day period.
The system is designed to curb impulses. In other words, if a player wants to increase these limits, the change only takes effect after a 48-hour waiting period.
In addition, operators must display mandatory alerts when a user reaches 75% of the stipulated limit and offer immediate self-exclusion tools, valid for up to 12 months.
Prize caps and the future of the market
To prevent JONUM from turning into disguised casinos, the government imposed strict prize caps.
Therefore, winnings in “goods” cannot exceed €1,000 per year. On the other hand, for cryptocurrency rewards, the limit is €25,000 annually per player, and the total distributed by the game cannot exceed 20% of its revenue.
These restrictions are expected to shape the market, directly affecting giants like Sorare, which also faces regulatory challenges in the United Kingdom.
ANJ will hold an information session on February 19th to guide companies interested in offering products.
