Shrapnel goes into Early Access on Steam

FPS shooter Shrapnel is launching in early access on Steam on Thursday 12th March from 11am PST.

The game had initially been available via Epic Games Store since February 2024 but developer Neon Machine’s restructuring has now resulted in what looks like a new build of the game and its surrounding ecosystem.

None of the previous NFTs, which were on the Avalanche blockchain, or stats from previous playtests are connected to this version of the game, at least in terms of what is currently available through the provided website.

Of course, this Steam version of the game doesn’t contain any blockchain elements due to platform restrictions. Shrapnel’s eventual web3 rollout will happen on GalaChain, with a particular focus on the Chinese market thanks to the developer’s long-term agreement with Trusted Copyright Chain.

As for the launch content, players will be in Shrapnel’s main Tokyo map, in a 4×4 mode that will see two teams fighting to be the first to collect and deposit 300 units of Sigma. Sigma is the game’s signature energy element, which falls from the sky via regular storms. As well as being collectible, in-game characters also have special powers, which use Sigma.

Early access will launch with just two playable characters, the speed-based Swan and tank-like Index. Swan uses Sigma for short dash moves, while Index uses it to create energy blasts to either knock back enemies or perform long repositioning moves. A limited set of weapon loadouts will be available, while equipping weapon skins will provide XP boosts. Each of these operators has a level 20 cap.

Players can also earn exclusive cosmetics through the early access process, with new gameplay dropping every Wednesday at 10am PST.
