Blockchain Games — What’s Your Favourite Genre?

Hello Seedify Community,

Blockchain games have grown to be much more than the early collectable and trading card games that dominated the space when it was in its infancy. Now, players can experience high-octane first-person shooters, get lost in RPGs, and so much more. We are spoilt for choice with different types of games which are bringing more Web2 gamers over to blockchain gaming, along with the added financial incentives.

Before we take a look into which genres are proving to be the most popular, let’s recap what blockchain gaming is and how players are benefiting from it.

What is Blockchain Gaming?

Blockchain games must include blockchain technology to be classed as blockchain games. The games usually incorporate NFTs for gaming assets and crypto tokens for in-game currency. They are now also being built entirely on-chain.

The use of NFTs and tokens allows for a much richer player experience. Players can experience the same high-quality gameplay they are used to in traditional gaming but with additional features only available thanks to blockchain. Moreover, players can earn passive income from gameplay, participate in decision-making from decentralized governance and, most importantly, own all of their in-game assets.

There are many more benefits for Web3 gamers. To learn more about Blockchain Gaming, please refer to our article: What is Blockchain Gaming and Why is it so Popular?

The Most Popular Blockchain Game Genres

It’s exciting to say that there aren’t many genres of games yet to make it to blockchain. We now have laid the foundations with some incredibly playable games, and with more funding finding its way into the industry, there has to be so much more to come.

Blockchain games now come as Multiplayer, Metaverse Lands, MMORPGs, and RPGs, to name a few. There has also been a rise in Free to Play games, creating an incredibly low barrier for entry.

Let’s take a look into some of the most popular genres and their top games.

1. Multiplayer / MMO

— A broad but easy-to-understand term, multiplayer or “Massively Multiplayer Online” games allow for large groups of players from all over the world to fight, socialise, compete and more.

Popular Multiplayer Games:

Voxie Tactics — A free-to-play, multiplayer role-playing game (RPG) pixelated metaverse game.

Decentraland — Arguably the biggest multiplayer metaverse game that is completely owned by the players.

2. RPG — “Role-playing games” are some of the most popular games in both traditional and blockchain gaming. They are set in mystical lands with dragons and monsters. However, Web2 gamers never truly own that new magical sword they won in their battle against a dragon. That’s why NFTs make these games so special.

Popular RPG Games:

Binemon — An adventure, meme NFT mobile game that combines RPG and collectable gameplay.

The Six Dragons — A feature-rich, fantasy open world RPG game.

4. Shooter — This genre is made up of subgenres, including first-person and third-person shooter games. Some of the biggest Web2 games, including Halo and COD, make up this genre. Blockchain FPS have now started to make an impression on Web3 gamers. There is a lot to come from this genre.

Popular Shooter Games:

EV.IO — A free-to-play FPS built on Solana designed to replicate classic games such as Halo and Quake.

METAOPS — An NFT-based FPS where players can team up to earn weapons and level up their characters.

5. Battle Royale — Another online multiplayer game, only this time, players usually compete against each other in a last-man-standing fight for victory.

Popular Battle Royal Games:

Blast Royale — A fast-paced mobile battle royal survival game where players can trade items and create custom builds.

Thetan Arena — An immensely popular eSports game built on a blockchain with over 25M total players.

Blockchain gaming has come a long way over the past 5+ years. Improvements to network speeds, capabilities and transaction costs mean more graphically demanding games are now being built on-chain. These advancements in tech have provided game designers with the opportunity to bring even more genres of games to the blockchain.
